Our outdoor learning areas at Durant Intermediate and Middle Schools are extremely valuable resources. Not only do the spaces make as luscious green eye candy, provide the perfect lunch spot for staff and support wildlife, but they provide a copious amount of lessons for not only our students but our community. However, maintaining these areas does require many helping hands. Thankfully we have our Green Team Summer Crew; Madison Farar and Madelyn (Maddie) Ragle. Though these two have kept the place running smoothly throughout the summer, with school starting, they needed some help for a complete reset. Enter the CMC team and Southeastern student Drake Smith (not pictured)!

Over the span of two days, volunteers helped prepare our outdoor learning areas for the 2025-26 school year. They pulled weeds, raked, mowed, watered trees, and even learned how to compost; all while enjoying each other's company and meeting new friends such as supervisor Kailey Ragle. When asked, “do you find the bond between CMC and Green Team important?” Kailey replied, “Yes, I think the bond between CMC and Green Team is very important, because Green Team is a program that focuses on community....working with people from our town helps us create even more connections...” I could not agree more. Community is the core foundation of living sustainably. Being able to build such bonds with outstanding members of our community and build off of each other's skills is truly the keyway into being able to spread sustainability.

Not only did the CMC workers volunteer, but so did Southeastern student Drake Smith, the president of the student wildlife club. His skills and knowledge were put to great use when working outdoors. His collaboration with Green Team was greatly appreciated.
